Beginning in late 1943 and continuing into the early 1960s, the iconic N-1 Deck Jacket design was the mainstay for use in the US Navy, but beginning in the early 1960s and continuing well into the 1970s, the A-2 Deck Jacket took over the lead role.
The A-2 Deck Jacket remains a well-designed, functional, and utilitarian piece that has a rugged good look. The A-2 Deck Jacket eliminated the animal hair used in the N-1 lining and incorporated a new nylon fleece that was equally warm, but lighter in weight and very soft and comfortable for those with skin sensitivities. Other changes included a new dark olive drab cotton outer fabric that was also lighter in weight, but just as durable and the addition of a snap-on chest pocket and hip belt adjusters to keep out icy winds.
